Fighting Back: Cybersecurity for You, Your Family & Your Firm
December 1, 2015
Evercore Wealth Management featured Celina Realuyo, the President of CBR Global Advisors LLC and the Professor of Practice at the National Defense University William J. Perry Center for Hemispheric Studies, at a client event on December 1, 2016 in New York. As part of a wide-ranging discussion on cyber terrorism, she provided the following tips:
Use two factor authentication for email accounts. If your email account doesn’t offer this function, change to a provider like Google or another one that does. Multifactor authentication can be implemented on devices, in email, and in most banking, investing and social media websites.
Do not click on any links or attachments you receive via email unless you are sure that it was sent to you by one of your contacts or is from a vetted source.
Password protect your cellphone and computer with strong unique passwords that have at least eight characters and contain capital letters, numbers, symbols, etc. and cannot be easily identifiable by someone researching your personal data.
Do not save passwords in your computer. Use a secure web vault or other password manager service such as LastPass or 1Password that uses multifactor authentication.
Change passwords for banking and other important financial records each month and do not use the same password for your email and bank accounts.
Do not use free wireless networks in cafes, on Amtrak and in public spaces, and use private web browsing when you are on the internet.
Secure your home wireless network with a WPA2 password, and change the name of your wireless network from the default SSID.
Protect your money by making sure that any site where you shop or bank is security enabled. Look for https:// rather than http:// when making transactions.
Back up work, photos and other digital information regularly and keep your anti-virus software updated.
